How to Know if You Have a Disc Herniation

herniated disc

Disc herniation (also known as bulging, sliding, or ruptured disc) is when a fragment of the disc nucleus has been pushed through a tear or rupture in the annulus into the spinal canal. This results in the space in the spinal canal becoming insufficient for the spinal nerve and "herniates" the disc into fragments. Because of this displacement, the disc presses on the spinal nerves, causing pain that can be severe. At Cox Chiropractic Clinic in Charlottesville, our chiropractors can help.

Herniated Discs

The symptoms vary greatly depending on the position and size of the herniated disc. In some cases, if there is no pressure on a nerve, a patient may only feel a dull ache or no pain at all. If it is pressing on a nerve, it may cause pain, numbness, or weakness in the area where the nerve travels. A person with chronic or intermittent low back pain may have a herniated disc.

Warning Signs

Because the symptoms of a herniated disc can be mild, it can be difficult to tell if you have one. Even if the symptoms are severe, they may indicate various other spinal or nerve conditions. Here are some spots in signs you might have a herniated disc:

  • Pain that shoots down your leg (usually just one)
  • Pain and numbness on one side of your body
  • Pain that worsens after sitting
  • Pain while walking
  • Tingling in your hips and legs
  • Pain that worsens after sleeping
  • Weakness in your legs

How Chiropractic Care Helps Herniated Discs

A chiropractor can gently stretch your spine to relieve herniated disc symptoms. It's known as spinal decompression. It can be used to treat a herniated disc without requiring surgery. In addition, a chiropractor can use chiropractic adjustments, corrective exercises, lifestyle advice, and other services to provide relief.
