What Is Spinal Decompression and How Does It Work?

At Cox Chiropractic Clinic, we place the needs of our patients in Charlottesville, VA first. We know that many of our patients have questions when it comes to chiropractic care. We are here to answer them. Prior to asking patients to agree to any treatment plan, we want them to understand what the treatment is and why we are recommending it. To that end, one of the most common treatments that we use is called spinal decompression. There are a few important points that everyone should keep in mind regarding this common treatment used by a chiropractor.

What Is Spinal Decompression?

One of the most common treatments that we use at Cox Chiropractic Clinic is called spinal decompression. This is a treatment plan that uses something called traction therapy. In traction therapy, the goal is to place a little bit of pressure on the ends of the spine to expand the vertebrae ever so slightly. The goal is to increase the amount of space between the vertebrae, providing more space through which the muscles, ligaments, and nerves can pass. There are a few common conditions that we will use spinal decompression to treat. Our goal is to target the root cause of our patients' concerns, helping them feel better.

When Is It Used?

There are several situations in which we might use spinal decompression. One of the most common is called a herniated disc. There are small discs that separate the vertebrae in the back. These discs provide cushions that keep the vertebrae apart. This reduces friction between the bones and provides room for nerves to operate.

If someone has suffered a herniated disc, this space is gone. The disc has ruptured, and the vertebrae are now on top of each other. This can lead to shooting pains down the legs due to nerve compression. With spinal decompression, the goal is to remove this compression. The vertebrae will be separated and there will be more room for the nerves to pass. This can help people recover from a herniated disc without requiring a surgical procedure.
