Your right and left sciatic nerves are the largest nerves in your body. They leave the spinal cord in the lower back and branch off to provide motor and sensory information to your legs. Sciatica is a syndrome occurring when one (rarely both) of your sciatic nerve roots becomes compressed and pinched by something.

Causes of Sciatica

Several things could cause your sciatic nerve to be pinched or compressed. Common sources include a herniated disc, a bulging disc, or joint narrowing and other changes related to a chronic wear and tear condition like osteoarthritis or degenerative disc disease. You may be more likely to experience nerve compression due to factors like chronic stress, physically demanding job tasks, repetitive bending, lifting, or twisting, and even things like excessive sitting, smoking, and poor nutrition.

Rarely, tumors may also compress the sciatic nerve. A related condition called piriformis syndrome leads to compression of the sciatic nerve by a muscle deep in your hip called the piriformis, which helps turn your leg out.

Symptoms of Sciatica

Even though the origin of sciatica is in the back, the main problematic symptom associated with sciatica is leg pain. Specifically, people with sciatica often report:

  • Sharp, stabbing, burning, or searing pain that shoots down the buttocks and back of the leg (maybe all the way to the foot)
  • Numbness and tingling in the leg

A person may also have stiffness and spasms in the spine. Pain is often worse first thing after rising from a bed or chair, or after standing for a long time.

How Our Charlottesville Chiropractor Staff Can Treat and Manage Sciatica

Our chiropractic team has several services to offer people suffering from Sciatica nerve pain:

  • Exercises can be done to help realign and heal damaged disc tissue, increase core stability, and reverse residual leg weakness
  • Chiropractic adjustments can gently realign your spine and reduce pressure on the affected nerve root
  • Thermotherapy (including heat packs and ultrasound) to stimulate pain relief and reduce muscle spasms or back stiffness
